What is Cancer?

Cancer is not just a single disease, but a broad group of over 100 different diseases. At its core, cancer is a disease of the cells.

In a healthy body, human cells grow, divide to form new cells, and eventually die when they grow old or become damaged. Cancer occurs when this orderly process breaks down due to changes (mutations) in the DNA. Abnormal or damaged cells survive when they should die, and new cells form when they are not needed. These extra cells can divide without stopping and may form solid growths called tumors.

If left untreated, these malignant cells can invade nearby healthy tissues and spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems—a process known as metastasis.

Common Types of Cancer

Cancers are generally classified by the type of tissue or organ where they begin. The main categories include:

1. Carcinomas

This is the most common type of cancer. Carcinomas are formed by epithelial cells, which cover the inside and outside surfaces of the body.

2. Sarcomas

Sarcomas are cancers that form in the bone and soft tissues, including muscle, fat, blood vessels, lymph vessels, and fibrous tissues (such as tendons and ligaments).

3. Leukemias

These are cancers that begin in the blood-forming tissue of the bone marrow. Unlike other cancers, leukemias do not generally form solid tumors. Instead, large numbers of abnormal white blood cells build up in the blood and bone marrow, crowding out healthy blood cells.

4. Lymphomas

Lymphoma is cancer that begins in lymphocytes (T cells or B cells), which are disease-fighting white blood cells that are part of the immune system. Abnormal lymphocytes build up in lymph nodes and lymph vessels.

5. Melanoma

A type of cancer that begins in the cells that become melanocytes, which are specialized cells that make melanin (the pigment that gives skin its color).

Types of Oncology Treatments & Procedures

Modern oncology uses a variety of highly advanced procedures to destroy cancer cells, shrink tumors, and prevent the disease from returning. Depending on the stage and type of cancer, an oncologist may recommend one specific treatment or a combination of several.

1. Cancer Surgery (Surgical Oncology)

Surgery is often the first line of defense for solid tumors that are localized (contained in one area).

2. Chemotherapy (Medical Oncology)

Chemotherapy uses powerful medications to circulate throughout the entire body and destroy fast-growing cancer cells.

3. Radiation Therapy (Radiation Oncology)

This treatment uses concentrated, high-energy rays (like X-rays or protons) to damage the DNA of cancer cells, causing them to die.

4. Immunotherapy

A groundbreaking approach that boosts your body’s own immune system to fight the cancer. Cancer cells are highly deceptive and can “hide” from your immune cells. Immunotherapy drugs strip away this disguise, allowing your immune system to recognize and attack the cancer naturally.

5. Targeted Therapy

Unlike chemotherapy, which can affect healthy fast-growing cells (like hair follicles), targeted therapy uses drugs designed to strictly identify and attack specific genetic mutations or proteins inside the cancer cells. This effectively shuts down the cancer’s ability to divide and grow while sparing healthy tissue.

6. Hormone Therapy

Certain cancers, particularly breast and prostate cancers, use the body’s natural hormones to fuel their growth. Hormone therapy uses medications or surgery to block the body from producing these hormones or interferes with how hormones behave, effectively “starving” the cancer.

7. Bone Marrow Transplant (Stem Cell Transplant)

Used primarily for blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. High doses of chemotherapy or radiation are used to destroy the diseased bone marrow. The patient is then infused with healthy, blood-forming stem cells (either from their own body or a donor) to rebuild a brand-new, healthy, and cancer-free immune system.

8 . CAR T-Cell Therapy

This groundbreaking treatment trains your own immune system to fight cancer. Cancer cells often hide from the immune system; immunotherapy drugs strip away this disguise. CAR T-cell therapy takes this a step further by extracting a patient’s immune cells, genetically modifying them in a lab to attack cancer, and infusing them back into the body.

9. Robotic-Assisted Surgery

For solid tumors, surgical oncology has become incredibly precise. Using robotic arms controlled by a master surgeon, tumors can be removed through tiny incisions with unparalleled precision, resulting in less pain, fewer complications, and much faster recovery times.

10. Proton Beam Therapy

An incredibly advanced form of radiation therapy. Instead of using X-rays, it uses protons to deliver a high dose of radiation precisely to the tumor while stopping exactly at the tumor’s edge. This spares surrounding healthy organs from radiation damage, making it highly effective for brain, spine, and pediatric cancers.
